Description of Elective Experience:

Our brand new state of the art facility holds 6 exam rooms, dental suite, surgery room, urgent care triage, isolation, large treatment and lab area, as well as multiple patient holding areas.  Open 7 days week week, we offer both general practice alongside urgent care. This externship opportunity would give you the ability to get hands-on experience in both areas of small animal medicine within one location.  In addition to GP & Urgent Care, we have multiple mobile surgeons who visit our hospital to perform more extensive procedures and orthopedic procedures.

Description of Elective Experience:

Student will shadow one of 4 doctors on any given day. All doctors are mixed animal veterinarians. The student will rotate through small animal appointments and surgeries, ranging from routine wellnesses to work ups (internal medicine, orthopedic, derm). Surgeries range from routine spay/neuters, mass removals and routine dentals. On the large animal side, the student will shadow a veterinarian through their typical day which may include herd checks, equine vaccinations, power floating, sick animal work, TB testing and emergencies as they arise.

Typically 2-4 weeks, an externship is an opportunity to practice and gain constructive feedback working alongside our medical teams. Immerse yourself in daily operations, such as medical rounds, client communication, diagnostics, and patient planning. The student will shadow an experienced emergency or critical care clinician for a 10/12 hour shift.  They will follow cases through the complete patient and client experience including triage, history, physical exam, treatment plans, interpreting diagnostics, observing client communication for delivery of results, discharging or admitting to hospital.

Unleashed Veterinary Dermatology, CT
Description of Elective Experience:

During the course of the student's time with Unleashed Veterinary Dermatology. They will learn to determine the best way to test for and diagnose a number of diseases including but not limited to: Immune mediated diseases, environmental vs food related allergies, bacterial vs. fungal infections, endocrine disorders and conditions caused by ectoparasites. Options for treatment and testing that the student will learn about are as followed:  Allergy testing, Biopsies, Cultures, Dermal Microabrasion, Otoscopy, Skin scrapings, Genetic testing, Endocrine evaluation, Food allergy evaluation, Immunotherapy, Laser surgery, Phototherapy, Trichoscopy.

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a small animal clinic that sees cats,dogs and some exotics (birds and reptiles).  We practice general medicine and perform soft tissue surgeries.  Our clinic has ultrasound, digital X-ray, therapeutic laser amongst other technologies.

Description of Elective Experience:

The NJ Racing Commission regulates the racing industry in New Jersey.  The veterinarians that work for the racing commission are responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of the horses participating in the races at Meadowlands Racetrack (Standardbred racing) and Monmouth Park (Thoroughbred racing).  This includes pre-race examinations ensuring horse soundness, attending emergencies/injuries during the races on the racetrack, observing the entrants at different points of the racing experience (paddock, warm-up, starting gate and returning after the races) to ensure soundness and assess injuries.  Horses are also examined out-of-competition for soundness post race day.  Horses are also watched training in the morning for soundness issues.

The student will shadow the veterinarians and observe them at all times during their race day.  Reasons for scratching a horse will be discussed and also anatomy will be covered while horses are examined.  The student will learn about the risks of racing and the risk factors that the veterinarians take into account when examining a horse and making a decision about soundness.  The student will also learn about the racing industry.

The student will also have the ability to be at Parx Racetrack during this time to see how different jurisdictions are the same and how they are different and learning many of the same things as in NJ.
