Description of Elective Experience

Student will be shadowing one of the four veterinarians at our practice to gain experience and knowledge in all aspects of general small animal medicine. Experiences include interacting with clients, examining patients, laboratory testing (in house or through Idexx, Cornell, University of Penn, Michigan, Texas A & M), radiology, ultrasonography, anesthesia, surgical procedures, and dentistry. Student will also have exposure to end-of-life discussions with clients and the euthanasia process.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

X-ray equipment, In house ultrasound, Dentaldaire Machine for dental procedures, Idexx in house lab including: Catalyst One blood analyzer, SediVue urine analyzer, and ProCyte hematology analyzer.

5 veterinary technicians, 2 veterinary assistant, 5 receptionists 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will be expected to be in the hospital from 8am to 5:30pm every weekday, with exceptions for holidays. Student will shadow and observe one of our doctors every shift, assist doctors/staff for exams/treatments/other procedures, assist with medical records, communicate with clients, and have the opportunity to scrub into surgery.
