Description of Elective Experience:

The veterinarians at Glenwood Veterinary Clinic understand and appreciate the value of hands-on experience in learning about veterinary medicine. Students will have the opportunity to work with each of the doctors in the areas of equine, small animal, and livestock.

Description of Elective Experience:

This elective takes place at a mixed animal practice in Tucson, Arizona, with a focus on large animal medicine. The practice includes a large animal ambulatory service,  equine surgery, and onsite  ICU. Students can choose to gain experience in mixed, small, or large animal medicine based on their interests. The large animal practice is primarily equine. Throughout the week, students participate in both ambulatory practice and in the clinic, performing activities including animal restraint, medication administration, equine dentals, blood draws, IV catheter placement, minor procedures, surgical assistance, and patient care depending on the student’s experience and level of comfort. Doctors prioritize student education, encouraging questions and active learning in a supervised environment.

Progressive general practice primarily seeing dogs and cats, 5% include exotics, livestock and equine. Heavy in surgery and dentistry. We provide day one ready experience and willing to be very hands-on and teach GP and surgery skills (soft tissue and orthopedic). We offer urgent care and emergency during normal business hours.

Description of Elective Experience:

Veterinary students will participate in the day to day activities of a busy small animal practice. They will have the opportunity to work through outpatient cases with the attending veterinarian and participate in surgery and dentistry (depending on comfort level). Veterinary students will also have the opportunity to practice hands on skills, interpreting diagnostic tests, and communicating with clients.

Description of Elective Experience:

Lake Equine Associates is an equine racetrack medicine practice located in Northfield, Ohio. The practice primarily serves Northfield Park, a Standardbred racetrack that stables several hundred horses, as well as a nearby training facility. This elective offers veterinary students the opportunity to become fully immersed in racetrack medicine while gaining hands-on experience at the track. Students may assist with a variety of  treatments. The practice also routinely performs diagnostic imaging such as radiographs and ultrasounds. Additionally, students will have the chance to experience race days and observe veterinary involvement during live racing events.

Description of Elective Experience:

Rhino Connect is a global veterinary program aiming to unite individuals from around the world with a shared passion to provide critical veterinary care to wildlife and help save rhinos from extinction. This unique program offers students with the rare opportunity to collaborate with one of the world’s leading researchers in rhino IVF—a cutting-edge initiative to enhance genetics and boost reproduction in this endangered species. With only two of these research groups  globally, our close involvement provides unparalleled hands-on experience.

Participants gain exposure to a wide range of wildlife species, contributing to life-saving procedures such as lion surgeries and the rehabilitation of orphaned animals. Our program emphasizes the importance of working within diverse cultural contexts, offering real-world experience in community engagement, aiding human-animal conflicts and learning how to provide veterinary care to animals whilst still abiding to  the surrounding culture. 

Students in the Rhino Connect Veterinary Program are on the front lines of conservation. Supporting emergency veterinary responses, engaging in ongoing species management, and contributing directly to critical research that shapes the future of wildlife care worldwide.
