Mission/Overland Park Veterinary Emergency and Specialty, KS

Description of Elective Experience

You can fully customize your MVES externship to your interests and academic needs. We accommodate students in two- to eight-week rotation blocks in the department of your choice that will anchor your experience, but allow you to spend time on other services and go where the cases take you. When you enter the program, we will design an experience that includes time in our sister hospital in Overland Park and participation in rounds with our rotating interns. All veterinary student levels are welcomed. Possible concentration areas include: Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Anesthesia/ pain management, and Neurology.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student responsibilities vary by experience level and which specialty they chose to experience during their time at MVES/OPVES. Clinical year students will primarily shadow the attending doctors, but there may be some more hands on experiences on the ER service. Students may get to perform thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, central line placement, TFAST/AFAST and wound repair under the direct supervision of an ER doctor.

Shifts are generally 8-10 hours long and are 4-5 days/week depending on specialty chosen.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

We do not have housing available, but a $1500 stipend for travel and accomodations is provided.
