Charles River Laboratories, Mattawan, MI Description of Elective Experience: Charles River Laboratories is a contract research organization with opportunities for veterinary students to learn laboratory animal medicine with both rodents and larger animals. The student will have a variety of experiences during their time with CRL. They will have some hands on technical training with our training department, shadow clinical veterinarians and learn of their role in preclinical safety evaluations and discuss case management, they will have the opportunity to spend some time with our necropsy, pathology, and clinical pathology departments to learn about the importance of these areas within safety assessment, have a project to work on and present at the completion of the experience, spend time with our behavior staff, and spend some time within our surgery department. Forsman Farms, MN Description of Elective Experience: Commercial chicken egg-producing operation based in central Minnesota. Student will work with company veterinarian approximately 40-50 hours a week. Evenings and weekends are not required. Student many have the opportunity to spend time practicing clinical skills with other employees if scheduling permits. Student will travel with veterinarian or other employees to conventional and cage free pullet and laying hen farms in Central MN. Travel times within the company’s MN holdings will range from 10-90 minutes. Daily routines include flock wellness exams, sample collection for ongoing management trials, meetings with various company stakeholders, informal consultations with farm managers and other company stakeholders, and record writing and data analysis. Student will observe Forsman Farm’s veterinarian’s approach to flock health management and have opportunities to practice flock record keeping techniques as much as possible. Audubon Nature Institute, LA Description of Elective Experience: Students rotate between 3 properties owned and operated by the Audubon Nature Institute. The properties include the Audubon Zoo, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and the Freeport McRoran Species survival center. In addition, students are also invited to assist with the rescue and rehabilitation of stranded marine mammals and sea turtles through the Coastal Wildlife Network. Students daily duties will include assisting with work ups and treatments of cases, managing wildlife cases that present to the Zoo, pariticipating in Necropsies, and completeing weekly reading and written assignments covering a wide variety of taxa. The student will perform a physical exam when appropriate and may complete medical records under the supervision of the veterinarian. The student will observe anesthesia and surgery performed by the veterinarian. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, One Health Office (online), GA Description of Elective Experience: CDC’s One Health Office is involved in both domestic and global health activities that help advance CDC’s mission to protect public health and prevent disease. CDC’s One Health Office recognizes that the health of people is connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. A One Health approach encourages collaborative efforts of many experts (like disease detectives, laboratorians, physicians, and veterinarians) working across human, animal, and environmental health sectors to improve the health of people and animals, including pets, livestock, and wildlife. CDC’s One Health Office is working on a variety of projects and collaborations both domestically and internationally.
