Externship Details Length of externships – 2 – 4 weeks
Externship Experience Come to a multi-doctor small animal hospital to gain real life clinical experience in a fast paced but mentoring environment in our brand new 6,000 sq. ft. building. Be exposed to small animal clinicians from 20 plus years of experience to recent graduates. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: observing and assisting in soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries; performing spay and neuters with our local rescues; assisting in exam rooms; performing physical examinations on client owned pets; analyzing in house and reference clinical and pathologic lab results; interpreting radiographs and ultrasounds; assisting in dental cleanings, interpreting dental radiographs, learning the fundamentals of simple and surgical extraction of teeth. Lastly, if an animal needs to be hospitalized overnight you will oversee its care. You will be assigned to a veterinary mentor for the entire externship period. We expect you to work alongside doctors for 20 to 25 hours per week. The other part of that time you will assist our nursing staff with patient care. Housing We offer a fully furnished apartment with a kitchen and bath/shower directly above the hospital. Stipend We offer a weekly stipend of $150 dollars. Humane Society of Broward County, FL Description of Elective Experience: The student will spend two weeks mainly with the staff veterinarians practicing surgery and shelter medicine. They will be given the opportunity to perform spays, neuters and other soft tissue surgery. They will be asked to work up cases in the shelter given our limited resources. They will be asked to make medical decisions (under supervision) regarding infectious disease that will take into account the general population of the shelter. Ventana Animal Clinic, NM Description of Elective Experience: Students will shadow the veterinarians in our practice. For preventative and wellness exams, students will engage the pet owners obtaining history and physicals prior to partnering with the veterinarin. There will be a team effort to determin the plan and action. In our practice we provide spay/neuter for the local shelter. Students will obtain physicals for the days surgical animals, and under the direct supervison of the veterianrian provide the elective sterilization. Scrubbing in on other procedures will be expected and encouraged Approximately 1/4 of our pet visits are exotics or pocket pets. Animal Welfare Institute, Farm Animal Department, DC Description of Elective Experience: The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is a science-based lobbying group that works to promote and draft legislation that enhances animal welfare in multiple species. During this externship, students will be able to work with public policy officials, lawyers, government agencies, trade associations, and animal advocates while learning about current state or federal legislation, regulations, and litigations related to farm animal wellbeing. The four main campaigns AWI farm animal department is currently working on include on-farm husbandry, humane livestock transportation, humane slaughter, and transparency in food labeling.
During a typical day’s work, students will have the opportunity to work on multiple issues, with every day being different from the last. Work can include meeting with Congress members and their staff about key issues, reading through and summarizing government records and reports, participating in strategic meetings and conference calls with other organizations, drafting press releases and articles for the AWI magazine or website, and reviewing scientific literature to inform specific public policy recommendations. There are also opportunities to meet with veterinarians working with the USDA and AVMA on federal livestock policy. Since AWI is a small organization, students will have the opportunity to learn how the organization runs and how each campaign fits into the organization’s larger mission. Proximity: |
