Georgia Sea Turtle Center/Jekyll Island Authority, GA
Description of Elective Experience:

The extern will be involved in all aspects of wildlife rehabilitation with a focus on sea turtles, native turtles and birds. The extern will assist with husbandry, medicine and surgery and will interface with both our research and education teams. Dr. Norton is board certified in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. The extern is required to have a small project during their stay and at the end do a powerpoint presentation to the staff.

Our externs will experience what is it like to work in a busy suburban small animal hospital.  They will accoumpany our doctors into exam rooms, help work-up sick pets, assist in surgery and help with interpretation of diagnostic results.

Students will work along side the specialists (we have ECC, IM, Surgery, Cardiology-these options are not available to select above) or emergency service to manage hospitalized and out patient cases. They will be involved in physical exam, developing a plan, interpretation of diagnostic tests, client communication.

Semi-rural community practice allows us to serve clients from many walks of life and income ranges, unlike the more homogenous suburbs.

Well equipped full service small animal practice plus limited haul in services for livestock and exotcs allow professional interest without the obstetrical emergencies after bedtime and before dawn.

We serve two of the community's shelters with facility visits every Tuesday afternoon.

Two full time and two part time veterinarians from three universities allow a fusion of ideas and perspectives.

One veterinarian certified in acupuncture and spinal adjustment (c,VMA VMST)

Description of Elective Experience:

The goal of this joint rotation at the Hatfield Marine Science Aquarium Visitor Center (HMSCAVC), Aquarium Science Teaching Aquarium (AQSTA) and the Oregon Coast Aquarium (OCA) is to allow the veterinary student to begin to solidify some of the knowledge and skills required to oversee in the health management of captive aquatic animals. The primary focus of this rotation will be on fish and invertebrate health management, with a smaller portion devoted to birds and mammals.

Description of Elective Experience:

Our clinic, Piedmont Equine Associates, is located in Madison, Georgia approximately 60 miles
east of Atlanta and 25 miles south of Athens. We are a five doctor practice that offers
ambulatory and in-clinic services including: extensive reproduction services (artificial
insemination, embryo transfer, ICSI, stallion collection/standing, and foaling services), surgery
(a wide array of procedures with the exception of colic surgery), lameness/sports medicine,
internal medicine and intensive care, dentistry, emergency services, and routine preventive care.

Externs will assist in management of hospitalized patients and administering treatments/performing
exams, assisting during surgeries/procedures and during ambulatory calls.  The student will be
paired with a veterinarian each day for in-depth discussion of cases and subjects within
the field of equine veterinary medicine.  When time allows, journal club is held and the student
is expected to participate by presenting a current article of their interest.  Help with weekend 
treatments of hospitalized cases is also expected.
