Emergency and critical care externship

Come learn at our equine-only sports medicine practice working on Grand Prix jumper, dressage, and hunter horses! We’re based in the Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) for the warm part of the year and Wellington FL for the winter half of the year; you get to skip the cold, and be where all the action happens.

Excellent team culture, cutting edge medicine, and top tier athletes make this a rare experience in the veterinary world. We want to pave the way for the future of the equine veterinary industry by getting students into clinical experiences early.  I enjoy teaching: mentorship is key while showing the nuances of lameness, ultrasound, xray, and advanced injection techniques (hips, necks, backs, arterial stem cell perfusions,etc.) Experience best in class equipment: digital xray, shockwave, Prostride, A2M, PRP, ultrasound etc).

This elective experience is created with the mindset of setting you up for success in a sports medicine career and building relationships with the best horses, owners, trainers, and farriers in the business.

• Assists veterinarian and veterinary technicians with animal intake examinations and follow up exams of admitted patients and education animal ambassadors

• Assists with radiographs and lab specimen collection and interpretation of lab values 

• Restrains wildlife species for physical examination and treatments 

• Observes surgical procedures involving anesthesia of wildlife patients 

• Covers at minimum one four-hour shift/week on our community information line

• Doses and administers medications; provides nursing care to patients 

• Performs weekly visual assessment of pre-release facility patients 

• Responsible for presenting approved research project upon completion of externship and lead two wildlife focused journal club discussions for hospital staff and volunteers 

• Rotates through animal husbandry areas at the education and pre-release facilities 

• Maintains constant focus on safe workplace practices 

• Develops an understanding of and adherence to federal, state and local wildlife policies

• Personally commits to our Core Values and organizational policies and procedures 

• Performs additional duties as assigned Necessary Knowledge and Experience 

• Currently enrolled as a first or second year veterinary student in an accredited veterinary program Strong interest in pursuing a career in wildlife or exotic veterinary medicine

In coordination with your education plan and curriculum, we are able to craft an experience that is right for you to push towards a successful start to your career. 

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) & Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) programs have a variety of different requirements per program. With that, our focused mentorship program offers the experience where you are specifically externing with one of our experienced staff serving as your mentor during that time. After application, you will work with our Lead Educator and Human Resources to ensure that your experience aligns with where you are in your education path and the requirements of the clinical rotation you are seeking to fulfill.

Students will be involved in all aspects of case management including but not limited to physical exam, rule out list, medical record keeping, caregiver communications, diagnostic test result interpretation, anesthesia, surgery (routine and emergency procedures) and hospitalized patient care.  

Gain experience in mixed animal private practice. Student will work in clinic setting and on farm visits.

Follow DVM and RVTs through physical exam, anesthesia, monitoring, and dental procedures at a general practice working with cats and dogs.

Dengue is the world’s most common mosquito-transmitted viral disease and is endemic throughout the tropics, where an estimated 390 million infections occur annually. The mission of CDC Dengue Branch is to provide leadership to develop and promote evidence-based strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality from Aedes-transmitted viruses with a focus on dengue. Much of the Branch work is focused in the Caribbean, although our projects extend to the rest of the US and globally.

Students will have the opportunity to work on projects related to applied epidemiology and dengue. Projects may include implementation work on dengue prevention programs (i.e., vector management, vaccines); analyses of data from sentinel surveillance sites, passive surveillance, and other special projects; or outbreak response investigations, as available.

The primary supervisor will work with the student to find projects and activities that meet their interests and learning goals and identify the appropriate point person and resources on the Epidemiology Team to mentor them. Primary and secondary supervisors will be available for career advice and learning opportunities.

All applicants must apply through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 4th year Epidemiology Elective Program to be enroll in this elective.

With our wide range of horses from newborn foals, mares, geldings, and stallions we are always in need of vet services.  Some examples of the vet work required is artificial insemination, live cover breeding, freezing semen, semen evaluations, embryo transfers, reproductive ultrasounds, surgeries, vaccinations, teeth floats, coggins, and health certificates to name a few.

Follow around DVM and work up routine internal medicine cases and surgical cases that can be seen in general practice.  Scrub in to surgical procedures.  Learn how to manage clients and sick patients.
