Our five-doctor small animal practice treats patients ranging from cats and dogs to pocket pets, rabbits and bees. The student will have an opportunity to join doctors in appointments, help treat patients, assist in surgeries and have daily discussions with the veterinarians. The student will also get an introduction into honey bee management, treatment and prevention of diseases. We serve a diverse clientele and are located in the heart of Richmond Hill, north of the Greater Toronto Area.
The student will have the support of 5 doctors, 5 registered veterinary technicians as well as a many staff members that have been at the clinic for over a decade or more. All staff will be available to support student learning to optimize the experience. The hospital has a full IDEXX in house laboratory, microscope, digital radiograph unit, digital dental radiograph unit, dental suite, ultrasound, cryopen, tonovet, and two surgical suites.
The student is to treat this as an opportunity to practice their medical and surgical skills in a clinical setting. The student is expected to commit 35-40 hours per week and will be able to experience day, evening and weekend shifts. There are no overnight shifts. The student will be given opportunities to shadow a doctor in appointments and surgeries. The student will also be able to perform such duties on their own with direct supervision and follow cases from beginning to end. They will also be given opportunities to shadow RVTs to get hands on experience with lab equipment. If interested, the student will also be given an opportunity to do honeybee hive inspections on a farm.
