Offsite Electives

This elective is intended to give students a deeper insight into diagnostic veterinary pathology by participating in biopsy
and necropsy rotations. They will accompany and assist faculty and residents in their duties, and will be assigned
specific independent tasks.

We are a very busy mixed animal practice in rural montana.  We try to educate and give as much hands on experience of what it is like to be a rural mixed animal practitioner.  Spring and Fall is our busy seasons for large animals and the small animal side of the practice is always busy.  Students are able to see and be involved in many different types of cases. 

Our practice is nestled along two mountain ranges and the Yellowstone River in south central Montana, which offers numerous outdoor recreational activities for students to do on there downtime.  

Ocean Park is a hybrid zoological institution and theme park situated in Hong Kong. We have a large and diverse aquatic and terrestrial animal collection including marine mammals and giant pandas. Students will accompany veterinary staff on rounds and assist with and/or observe all clinical procedures during their placement, from clinical exams to anesthetic procedures to necropsies. When possible, hands-on duties during procedures will be assigned to students according to their aptitude. Students may be assigned reading material, projects, presentations, and data entry as appropriate.

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of laboratory animal medicine and provide a strong foundation in the discipline. Using a mix of didactic and hands-on training methods, students will gain proficiency in the veterinary care of lab animals, and apply their skills and knowledge gained in all previous courses in their veterinary curriculum. Discussions will be challenging and require independent thought and application of concepts to real-world situations. Students will be well-prepared for additional training in laboratory animal medicine as would occur though residency.

The Mayo Clinic Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) offers a two-week externship in laboratory animal medicine for veterinary students during their clinical training.  DCM employs five ACLAM board-certified/eligible laboratory animal veterinarians and six certified veterinary technologists who provide preventative and clinical medical care for animals used in research and over 40 animal care technicians working in five vivarium facilities.  The Mayo Clinic is also one of the two sites comprising the Minnesota Laboratory Animal Medicine Consortium (MLAMC), a three-year residency program in collaboration with the University of Minnesota.  The program accepts one resident per year at each site.

The scope of veterinary work is broad and includes providing preventative health care, clinical care including post-operative recovery and support, surgical/anesthetic support for large animal projects, review of animal research proposals, and working with scientists on choosing the appropriate animal models.

4. Recognize situational limitations and seek consults as needed

The EMC offers an opportunity for students to learn how a busy academic practice maintains a high level of care, in addition to offering clinical experience. Students will work directly with the faculty and house officers and will be taught methods of diagnosis and treatment of frequently encountered disorders such as lameness, respiratory problems, neurological disease and colic, as well as special surgical and medical procedures and intensive care of equine patients.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners - Arizona Region - is comprised of 4 locations [Avondale, Peoria, Scottsdale, and Phoenix]. Our Scottsdale and Phoenix locations offer IM opportunities. Otherwise, we are solely a 24 hour ER facility.

We are a busy small animal hospital in southern Ohio. The focus is general practice with mostly dog and cat patients with occasional pocket pets. The mornings consist of routine surgery including spay/neuter, mass removal, primarily soft tissue surgery. The afternoons consist of appointments scheduled every 15 minutes.
