Description of Elective Experience

AAHA accredited small animal general practice with limited exotics (pocket pets, reptiles) with focus on fear free. Students are given a mentor/coach DVM that will be with them on scheduled shifts to help keep students gain knowledge that they need. They will meet with coach DVM weekly, if not daily, to go over cases, discuss concerns, ask questions, and review any topic rounds given.

4 DVM practice with 1 CVT, and multiple VAs. Digital radiographs and digital dental radiographs, AFAST/TFAST ultrasound, blood machines for basic blood work, microscope, laser therapy, 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will have opportunity to assist in basic surgeries (neuters, OVH, mass removals) and non-elective procedures (cystotomies, pyometras, cryptorchid, foreign bodies, dental extractions) should they present themselves. Students will assist DVM with client communication, SOAP notes, case work-ups, as well as gain technical skills needed (blood draws, fecal exams, urinalysis, radiographs, dental radiographs, pet restraint, etc) Students are asked to assist with cleaning, running blood work, drawing blood work, patient restraint, reading fecals and urine, and obtaining history for DVM. Students are allowed to shadow in room, encouraged to ask questions, and will be asked to work-up treatment plans prior to DVM and review with DVM.
