| National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, OH Description of Elective Experience: This elective is intended to be an educational experience allowing students to gain research experience and familiarity with conducting research and public health projects in a Federal agency environment, and engage with public health professionals and veterinarians in a variety of job roles to explore career options in Federal service. During this elective, students will complete two related projects: 1) a literature and online resource scan to identify suggested resources to update key worker communication resources [NIOSH topic pages on occupational hazards for veterinary workers; a summary on reproductive hazards in veterinary workplaces; the wikipedia entry on occupational health for veterinarians] and 2) user testing of RePorter (a database of NIH-funded research projects) and a developmental interface drawing from RePorter database to identify both current research on occupational hazards in veterinary work, as well as products resulting from NIH-funded projects among veterinary workers. During this educational experience, students are also encouraged to engage with researchers in OneHealth/veterinary occupational health across CDC, attend research seminars, and meet one-on-one with staff to explore potential career paths at NIOSH and CDC. We have a growing, thriving urgent care practice Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12pm - 10pm. However, since opening urgent care we do see cases throughout the week that are fit into our normally scheduled GP appointments. | Arkansas Department of Health, AR Description of Elective Experience: The student will be assigned to the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), Outbreak Prevention and Response Branch, Zoootic Disease Section while enrolled in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology Elective Program (EEP). The EEP is an eight-week elective rotation to introduce medical and veterinary students to applied epidemiology and public health. | Neel Veterinary Hospital, OK Description of Elective Experience: Our hospital is open 24/7 and offer services for canine, feline and exotic species. The entire hospital is 14,000 sqft with a 3,000sqft Intensive Care Unit, Exotic Ward, CT, ultrasound, 11 exam rooms, Isolation Ward, Dental Suite, Double Surgery Suites and more. We have over 20 DVMs including specialists and over 130 total staff members. We welcome clinical year veterinary students for rotations that can be customizable due to our complex and varied caseload. Rotations can include ER, ICU, Exotics, Imaging, Surgery, Dentistry and GP. All species are seen in all of those areas so exposure to exotic species happens in each department. Extern students will be paired with DVMs and have hands on learning experiences with Exotics in Surgery, ICU, ER, GP and Imaging. | Valley Veterinary Clinic, WI Description of Elective Experience: In general, students will have the opportunity to get significant palpation/ultrasound experience, as well as medical/surgical experience. Those interested in advanced reproductive services will find plenty of opportunity to ride with our Genetic Services team. Other areas in which students can get experience include records analysis, calf lung ultrasound, employee training, and team meetings/consultation.
