Cooper Farms raises 6 million heavy toms annually and has a processing plant and cooked meats plant.  They also have 30,000 sows and raise 800,000 finishing pigs annually and houses 6 million layers.  We have three full time veterinarians on staff as well as welfare auditors, biosecurity auditors, and veterinary assistant.  We will get involved in different aspects of food production medicine in poultry and swine.  These could potentially include necropsy, diagnostics, medication decisions and vaccination decisions.

Students in this experience will be exposed to general practice medicine and surgical cases in the canine and feline species. Opportunities for soft tissue surgeries include OHE, BOD, small mass removals, dental cleanings, abdominal exploratory, cystotomy, gastropexy, surgical biopsy, cryosurgery, electrocautery, other.

Description of Elective Experience:

The student will be submerged into both small and large animal work. They can chose to go on large animal call or stay in house for surgeries or appointments with small animals. We have 4 doctors in the practice that the student will work with. We start the students with shadowing, but as they gain comfort, will be allowed to lead an appointment along side another vet guidance. We also have local farmers that will bring in barn cats for students to gain experience in spay/neutering.  We have numerous herd healths performed weekly for the student to gain palpating experience with the potential of also learning with an ultrasound.

South Maui Animal Clinic is a 2 doctor practice in Maui Hawaii. We practice in a remote area of the USA and are required to be generalist. We provide preventative medicine, emergency medicine, avian and exotic medicine. We do many surgical procedures here from mass removal, exploratory laparotomies, brachiocephalic procedures, orthopedic procedures (fracture repairs, TPLO, CBLO, TTT/trochleoplasty), Lap Spays/gastropexy/assisted cystoscopy. We have a flexible endoscope as well. We also provide avian, exotic and small mammal preventative and ER services. We also work locally with NOAA and the local aquarium, the Maui Ocean Center to provide medical and surgical (typically flipper amputations) for the resident sea turtle population in all of Hawaii.

Description of Elective Experience:
  • Students will gain exposure to the different aspects of technical service and consultant poultry medicine. Most flock visits will be within Pennsylvania and students will learn about various commercial poultry species and production types throughout the central and eastern regions of the state.  
  • Students will have opportunities to gain experience with the following commercial poultry species: turkeys, broilers, laying hens, game birds, and breeding flocks of each respective species. These flocks are reared to meet a variety of different consumer markets including conventional, NAE/ABF, organic, live bird markets, caged layers, cage-free layers, embryo egg layers, pasture raised, game birds raised-for-release, and others. 
  • Students must be prepared to actively participate during visits to farms, hatcheries, processing plants, feed mills, and other facilities involved in poultry production. Specific visit schedules will vary depending on client needs and regional disease challenges.
  • Students may also have out-of-state travel opportunities with the veterinarian to meet technical service demands for other BVS territories, where commercial poultry production is prevalent.
