Offsite Electives

We are a private mixed practice with a large haul in case load as well as several trucks with mobile units for farm calls.  We see a variety of species with the majority being beef cattle, a large number of equine, a fairly large number of goats, a few sheep and  pigs, and occasionally backyard chickens.  Student will experience receiving these cases, processing cattle, working a variety of haul in cattle and horse trailers from routine preventive medicine to lameness exams of bovine and occasionally equine cases, breeding soundness of bulls, pregnancy checking cows and sometimes mares, routine surgical cases, and going on some farm calls.  Student is welcome to participate in small medical and surgical cases if interested.

OMVC is a 3-Dr small animal practice in Owings Mills, MD. We serve a wide range of clientele from the suburbs surrounding Baltimore as well as the city itself. We see both wellness and sick cases, including urgent care, on a daily basis, as well as offering a wide variety of soft tissue surgery, imaging, and in house (and out) labs.

Michigan Humane, the oldest and largest nonprofit animal welfare organization in Michigan, is offering veterinary externships at our state-of-the-art medical facilities in Detroit, Westland, and Rochester Hills, Michigan. Our facilities incorporate a full-service veterinary practice, animal shelter, and a shelter medicine team under one roof, allowing our externs to practice in a private practice-like setting while also serving the community.

As a Michigan Humane extern, you will have the opportunity to gain exposure to a diverse caseload not seen in a traditional veterinary practice setting. Our medical team oversees the daily and emergency care of animals in our clinic and shelter. Externs will benefit from working alongside a team of skilled veterinary professionals while working in top notch medical facilities, utilizing state of the art equipment, including ultrasound, high speed dental, digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray and cautery. 

Designed for 3rd or 4th-year veterinary students currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary school program, our externships are for those who are seeking hands-on clinical experience and mentorship in a clinic and/or shelter setting. Each extern will be assigned an experienced veterinary professional as their personal mentor, working to develop their skillset and expand their clinical expertise. Students may choose from one of the following areas of focus: Clinical Medicine, Shelter Medicine, Surgery, Field Services, or Behavior. If you would like to experience a bit of everything, we have a general rotation available.

Externship applicants must be a veterinary student or graduate veterinarian with general interest and experience in equine medicine and surgery, as well as have:

• A basic knowledge of horsemanship.

• The ability to work as a team.

• A positive attitude.

9 DVM small animal hospital with dentistry, digital radiographs, in-house laboratory

Students will get to participate in our patient's appointments alongside our doctors performing a variety of modalities such as laser, underwater treadmill, massage, manual exercise, shockwave, ultrasound, acupuncture, and more. Each appointment is different and you may or may not get to see other things such as orthopedic castings and adjustments, radiographs, and various in-house diagnostics.

We do have versatile cases; neuro, orthopedic, and soft tissue injuries

Because each appointment is different we cannot guarantee students will get to see everything but we will do our best to provide students diverse cases during their visit.

Swine Vet Center is a swine-exclusive veterinary practice based in southern Minnesota. Our clinic has 17 veterinarians on staff who consult with swine producers throughout the U.S. and abroad. All veterinarians are AASV members. During the externship, Kaci will be scheduled to shadow veterinarians to encounter a variety of swine operations and learn about health and production strategies.

Hands on experience working with a mixed animal practice. 

The Zoetis US Poultry Technical Services team consists of 12 veterinarians that provide support to commercial producers of broilers, turkeys, layers and breeders.  The student will accompany our field veterinarians in troubleshooting flock health problems and developing solutions for commercial operations.

The Emory National Primate Research Center (ENPRC), Division of Animal Resources Veterinary Externship Program is designed to allow third and fourth year veterinary medical students the opportunity to experience the multifaceted field of Laboratory Animal Medicine as specifically relating to nonhuman primates.  In addition, the student can expect to learn the particular needs, regulations and guidelines associated with the use of non-human primates in biomedical research.  Laboratory Animal Medicine is a board-certified discipline that combines clinical medicine, preventative medicine, pathology, recognition/development of animal models, regulatory oversight, and collaborative/independent biomedical research.Fourteen veterinarians supervise the experience, and the students will work closely with veterinary residents and veterinary technicians to gain a working knowledge and appreciation of the specialty of nonhuman primate medicine. The student will spend a minimum of two weeks at the Main Research Center on the Emory University campus. The variety of species includes, but not limited to, squirrel monkeys, macaques and chimpanzees.  The rest of the time will be spent at the ENPRC Field Station located approximately 30 miles from the main campus.  The Field Station is our breeding facility composed mainly of outdoor compounds and large corals of group housed rhesus macaques.  The work day is from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.  You might be required to remain available for extra working hours should interesting clinical cases need extra care.  Each day routine will vary but will include clinical rounds and observations of the animals, report of clinical problems to the veterinarians and follow-up of those cases with the clinicians.  Observation of different types of surgeries and different imaging sessions (MRI, PET), participation in anesthesia monitoring and post-operative care as well as different experimental procedures requested by investigators such as bleeding, bronchoscopy, rectal and lymph nodes biopsies, CSF taps, i.v. infusions, etc., will also be part of the daily training.  You also have the opportunity to get involved in necropsy and histopathology of interesting select clinical cases.  Finally, you will attend an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee meeting to better understand the process involved in reviewing animal research proposals.  A variety of literature and documents will be provided which we will expect you to read and consult. Students are encouraged to spend a minimum of three weeks in order to provide a complete overview of the laboratory animal medicine specialty.  Students are encouraged to focus on areas of interest and seek a variety of experiences while visiting.  The experience may include some didactic/self-study time along with the more hands-on aspects of the program.  Students will be encouraged to ask questions and participate as much as possible.
