Description of Elective Experience:

Visiting students will function as one of the associate veterinarians at Millerstown Veterinary Associates.  Their activities will be under direct supervision by at least one licensed veterinarian. Duties will include standard appointments which will include preventive medicine as well as sick animals.  The expectation will be for students to experience a wide variety of cases from basic problems (e.g. otitis externa or allergies) to more extensive cases requiring medical work up.  In addition, students will be expected to participate in small animal surgeries.  The highest case load will be for spay and neuter surgeries and dentistries.  Less predictably, there may be opportunity to participate in other surgeries such as lump removals, abdominal exploratories, cystotomies and orthopedic procedures.

This is a very incomplete list of things that you may encounter and do while externing at LVS.  Your ability to perform some of these tasks depends upon where you are in your education and our comfort level with your skills.  Not every extern will be taught the same skills or have the same experience in our clinic.  We will endeavor to enhance your education to the best of our abilities.

1. Bovine Skills

Do a complete physical exam and make a diagnosis of common cattle diseases

Palpate a non-pregnant uterus and ovaries

Palpate a late pregnant cow

Interpret a reproductive ultrasound

Give IV fluids, IM shot, draw blood from tail vein

Infuse a cow

Drench a cow

Give oral bolus/magnet

Be able to diagnose a DA

Block for a DA and suture it

Identify and treat foot abscess in cow

Block calves for dehorning

Dehorn calves (burn and also larger ones to cut)

Take a non contaminated sample for mastitis

Milk culture and identify common pathogens

Identify and assist with untwisting uterine torsion

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a busy 2 doctor mixed animal practice in rural Utah.  We are 50% small and 50% large animal.  One doctor specializes in cattle and small animal while the other doctor specializes in horses and small animal.  We hope that this elective will give the student a broad array of real-life experiences that they might encounter in private practice.

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a an AAHA accredited general practice veterinary hospital. This is a brand new single doctor practice.  We perform most types of soft tissue, dentistry with radiology on every patient, local blocks etc that are up to standards of dental specialists. A mobile orthopedic surgeon is called to perform any necessary orthopedic surgeries. We work with 2 local rescues for discount spays and neuters to help out the community.

Objectives:

            A.         Learn to obtain a complete and accurate medical history.

            B.         Be able to perform a thorough physical examination and succinctly record the findings.

            C.        Learn proper animal handling techniques and provide excellent nursing care for various medical problems.

            D.        Understand the pharmacologic agents commonly employed in small animal medicine.

            E.         Learn various pertinent clinical skills and diagnostic techniques applicable to small animal medicine.

            F.         Develop and be able to use good communication skills, both verbal and written, in your interactions with staff, peers, and clients. 

            G.        Develop problem lists, differential diagnoses, and plan for Small Animal Internal Medicine cases.

Description of Elective Experience:

Students will gain practical, hands-on experience in an AAFP gold level feline friendly practice. We follow low stress handling recommendations and perform everything from wellness visits and vaccinations to complicated medical workups.

Description of Elective Experience:

The clinic is 50/50 large versus small animal practice.  Any interns would be exposed to both facets of the practice.  This would include surgery, farm calls, procedures and examinations.

Description of Elective Experience:

The SeaWorld Parks Externship is offered in the 3 SeaWorld Parks with a large aquatic animal population and Busch Gardens Florida, in Tampa, Florida, also with a large population of terrestrial animals.

The externship program in all 4 parks consists of a 3-4 week preceptorship for veterinary students wanting to augment their knowledge and experience in non-domestic animal medicine. The program is designed for fourth-year veterinary students. They will be given a full range of opportunities in aquatic and terrestrial animal husbandry and medicine which includes whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, walruses, sharks and rays, marine and freshwater fishes, penguins, and many other species of birds, amphibians, and reptiles at the SeaWorld parks; as well as gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, tigers, cheetahs, elephants, rhinoceroses, hippos, giraffes, zebras, antelope, kangaroos, wallabies, aardvarks, giant anteaters, and many other small-sized terrestrial mammals at Busch Gardens. Within such a diverse collection, there are some unique aquatic animals only found in certain parks, such as, the polar bears and southern sea otters at SeaWorld California, Pacific white-sided dolphins at SeaWorld Texas, and manatees at SeaWorld Florida. Most terrestrial mammals are based at Busch Gardens Florida.

Applications are accepted between September 1st and November 15th each year.
