Offsite Electives

IEVC is a very busy avian-exotic full service animal hospital.  Extern will gain exposure to many different species and common medical, surgical, and emergency procedures. Extern will shadow one of two staff veterinarians during the 2 week program.

The students will be able to assist in surgery, shadow a veterinarian while going into rooms to exam the pet and work with the Dr. to do follow up.

The course in the Small Animal Section consists of exposure to the Diagnostic Services of MJR-VHUP, namely clinical pathology, anatomic pathology (necropsy service), parasitology and microbiology.  The course is focused on development of clinical pathology skills and a practicum learning how to perform necropsies and interpret findings.  A portion of the rotation is also directed towards skill development in parasitology and microbiology.

The bioanalytical pathology portion, which comprises clinical pathology, parasitology and microbiology, will be divided into microscopy, discussion, and online interactive lesson sections. During the microscopy section, students will work with the supervising clinical pathologist or resident in the evaluation, interpretation, and reporting of cytologic specimens and blood film reviews. Discussions involving parasitology and microbiology will also include treatment options and best practices. Online lessons include work in parasitology, clinical pathology and microbiology.

Students are also required to perform necropsies, write necropsy reports and to familiarize themselves with the pathophysiology, histopathology and the clinical manifestations of various disorders encountered. Participation of students in presentation and discussion of cases is required. Students will be evaluated based upon enthusiasm, effort, ambition, and advancement in pathology knowledge as evaluated through the directed group discussions, necropsies, microscopy sessions and clinical competency outcomes assessments. A short paper is required.

There is a web-based introduction to VPTH710 Diagnostic Services and VPTH770 Diagnostic Services Elective, which students must review prior to the start of their rotation. Please note that it will take approximately 3 hours to review the video and written materials on the website.

I would love to be able to provide a student with practical small animal experience.  Although, we all would love to be able to fully work up each case, the real world does not always allow this.  Being a small animal vet for over 9 years and servicing a lower income clientele I feel I can help students think beyond a text book diagnosis.  Also, I feel any real world veterinary experience they can gain before going into the "real" world is beneficial. 

Student will be paired with one of our experienced Medical Directors to shadow and assist them throughout their work day.  Student will get a wide range of experience in our full service small animal hospitals including surgery (featuring surgical lasers), dentistry (including dental radiographs), ultrasound, and radiology.

Elective experience will encompass activities associated with that of a Technical Service Veterinarian and focus on Poultry vaccines and the vaccination process.

1.  Technical Service Field calls to evaluate bird health, vaccination programs and efficacy, crew vaccinations, and USDA Health Inspections for export.

2.  Hatchery inspection and audits of hatchery vaccination processes.

3. Field posting sessions and sample collection for laboratory evaluation.

4. Visits to Diagnostic Laboratory Support Facilities/  University of Pennsylvania and Aviserve in Delaware

I’m a private poultry veterinary consultant.  I have clients in British Columbia, Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Utah and Montana.  I work with all poultry species (layers, turkeys, broilers, ducks, squab (pigeons) both as commercial and breeders.  We will have long days (12 hours +) and short days. 

Students will perform all the duties I routinely perform including the following: taking blood and environmental samples, necropsy, performing Animal Welfare, FDA on-farm Audits, reviewing on farm bio-security protocols, reviewed BMP for poultry production (commercial and breeder level).  Work with turkeys, squab, layers (Conventional, cage free & pastured raised) and broilers (conventional, ABF).

The SVC is a mixed animal practice in the heart of Amish country. Employs 9 Veterinarians with varying amounts of specialization.

SVC takes care of approximately 400 dairies ranging in size from 1-1500 cows. Mostly production dairies, both coventional and organic, where SVC practices the latest in production medicine.  Reproduction, preventative medicine, dairy management, surgery and barn design are a few of the experiences and techniques externs will get to participate in.

The SVC also provides care to small ruminates, swine (mostly four-H), and white tail deer.  Small ruminants are given well care, preventative medicine, and we also provide advanced breeding services involving laproscopic AI and embryo transfer (seasonal). The white tail deer industry in our area is very large. We provide regulatory services, preventative medicine, well care and advanced breeding service which includes laproscopic AI (seasonal).

Equine medicine is  practiced on pleasure horses and Amish horse care (drafts and buggy horses). The SVC provides preventative medicine, surgery, reproduction, dental and well care which student externs will participate in.

Small animals are about 20% of the practice and we provide both preventative, well care, and surgery. SVC also provides advanced breeding service for canines with surgical and trans-cervical insemination.  We do allow externs to do OVH's and Castrations for our farms if prior arrangments are made.

The SVC has a certified accupuncturist and utilizes a therapeutic laser for alternative therapies.

Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston is a world renowned teaching hospital known for its long history of medical excellence. Angell offers 1-4 week externships to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. A wide variety of rotations are available to externs including Avian/Exotic Medicine, Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency/Critical Care, General Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology and Surgery. Externs are paired with senior veterinary staff and participate in clinics, cage-side rounds and didactic rounds. If time permits, externs can spend additional time in clinics or shadowing an intern or resident on the emergency service. The goal of our extern program is to provide veterinary students with an opportunity to observe a busy, urban, specialty referral medical practice and learn the foundational aspects of hospital practices and procedures. Angell's extern program provides a platform to bolster clinical skills, critical thinking, ethics and continued learning. The program also serves as an insider’s look for those interested in pursuing an internship at Angell.

South Shore Equine Clinic offers a 2-6 week externship and a 12 month internship program 3rd and 4th year vet students and to graduates of accredited veterinary schools that are eligible for an MA license. The goal of this externship is to give the student exposure to both ambulatory and hospital based general practice, with acess to specialty diagnostiscs including MRI, ultrasound, digital radiographs, endoscopy and gastoscopy. Advanced treatment modalities including PRP, IRAP, shockwave, accupuncture and chiropractic are used. The goal of the internship is to allow the intern to become a qualified ambulatory associate, as well as a qualified diagnostician familiar with all aspects of diagnostics and treatment options. Anesthetic duties are stressed during first half of internship.

Case load: Performance horse evaluations - show horse, standardbred racehorses, western pleasure, emphasis on diagnostics and therapeutic options. Internal medicine caseload includes referrals as well as medical colics; no colic surgery performed. General ambulatory/emergencies seen weekly and as needed.

Types of cases: 50% performance horse evaluations, 20% referral/internal medicine, 20% general ambulatory, 5% reproductive (seasonal), 5% emergency

Estimated breakdown of workload: Monday & Friday - full days ambulatory, routine preventative care as well as lameness/purchase exams. Tuesday/Thursday (am) - in clinic cases and surgeries; (pm) -ambulatory. Wednesday - travel to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket every other week. Saturday (am) - in clinic caseload

Emergency duty requirements: Shared rotation including nights and weekends (with back-up) for internship

Amount of supervision: Heavily mentored/supervised initially, leading to independence for some days and/or procedures on an individual basis.
