Animal Cancer & Imaging Center, MI Description of Elective Experience: Student will be offered the opportunity to participate in the scheduled appointments. They will be able to review pertinent medical records, perform physical examinations, and have an active participatory role in discussing the patient’s diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan. The student will be permitted to join the supervising clinician during appointments to observe conversations with clients. Mount Laurel Animal Hospital, NJ Description of Elective Experience: The externship program is for students currently enrolled at a veterinary school. The purpose of this two-week program is to gain real-world experience in veterinary medicine, and to see how a large private practice functions. Some of the goals of the program is to work on: history taking, develop/improve physical examination technique, interpretation of diagnostics, creation of problem and differential diagnoses lists, treatment plan creation, anesthesia plan creation, sterile technique, cost of care, and quality of life discussions/euthanasia. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, the mornings are filled with procedures such as dentistry, surgery, mass removals etc. The afternoons are typically filled with appointments. On Tuesdays, the entire day is devoted to appointments. Friday, the veterinarian is not on site and the hospital sees only tech appointments. Throughout the week, drop off appointments are accommodated based on the needs of the patient and staff availability. |

Ohio Department of Health, OH Description of Elective Experience: Students will work with the State Public Health Veterinarian on a variety of zoonotic public health projects in the Zoonotic Disease Program at the Ohio Department of Health. Experiences will be tailored to student interests and provide a comprehensive look into the work of State public health agencies and how they work with veterinarians, the general public, local health departments, and other state and federal agencies. Experiences and projects will vary based on the time of year and current zoonotic and One Health topics affecting Ohio.
