Description of Elective Experience

At Powell Veterinary Clinic, we build meaningful relationships with our clients to take only the best care of their fur babies! Students will learn how our Veterinarians practice high-quality medicine with the freedom of personalized touch and individuality. The student will work alongside the Veterinarians in routine, medical , wellness and consultation appointments. We run appointments and surgery almost every day, therefore, the student willgain experience in routine small-animal surgeries as well. The student will be expected to per‐form the duties similar to the those of a Veterinary Assistant, Veterinary Technician and ClientCare Specialist. In addition to hands-on skills, the student will be challenged to connect with clients and communicate with pet owners in a way that they understand.

Powell Veterinary Clinic is a small animal clinic located in Powell, Ohio. Powell is located in the Olentangy Valley between the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. We are a quick twenty-five-minute drive to downtown Columbus, Ohio. Whether it is shopping for a one-of-a-kind gift in our historic downtown or exploring the Olentangy Indian Caverns, there is something for everyone to see and do! It is just the right area for the student to relax and decompress after a productive work day.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our clinic is equipped to perform IDEXX in-house blood work, digital radiography, class 4 laser,dental procedures, soft tissue surgery and internal medicine. We foster a teamwork environmentand empower our staff to bring their ideas of both medicine and management style to the table.We are a hardworking, collaborative team that values the work that we do! It is important forstudents to understand team dynamics and the importance of being a team player in order totake the best care of our patients. The Veterinarians generally have a Veterinary Assistant andRVT assigned to them for the work day. We have designated Client Care Specialists to ensure clinic communications are running smoothly. Our seasoned manager can share financial data analysis and practice growth planning with the student should the prospect be interested in practice ownership.

 

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will benefit from working a 40 hour week to prepare for the exciting adventure ahead of becoming a licensed DVM. The student may choose a weekday schedule of 5 days (8 hour shifts) or 4 days (10 hour shifts). Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday we operate from 8AM to 6 PM; Thursday we are open from 8 AM to 7 PM. Saturday hours are available from 8 AM- Noon.
