Offsite Electives

Student will assist in small animal surgery and interact with clients.  See well patients and participate in cases.  Some large animal experience as the clinic sits on the family cattle farm and January is calving month so there could be some cattle work. Mostly small animal though.

Students are exposed to a balance of medical, surgical, and ambulatory practice including emergency/ICU care, advanced imagingincluding CT, sports medicine/lameness, reproduction, preventative maintenance, pre-purchase examinations, acupuncture and laser treatments. The Caseload is 25-50/week with a good balance of in-hospital and field cases. In addition to participation during our regular clinic hours Monday-Friday, externs are asked to participate in daily treatments and after hour treatments and emergency duties during their stay. Hands on participation is not guaranteed and is based upon verified safe horse handling skills. Externs generally rotate through each area of the practice; however,students may request an emphasis on one particular area. Each of the veterinarians in the practice, including current interns, vote for internshipselection. Therefore, students are asked to visit the clinic for at least one week and to spend time working with each of our associate veterinarians.Interns Dr. Jesse Jennyand Dr. Morgan Ramoswill help you with your orientation to the clinic. In-house patient rounds and a business meeting are held each Monday at 8:30 AM. These are held in the conference room of the main office. Radiology rounds are at 8:30 AM on Wednesdays and your participation is expected.Each Tuesday there are rotating rounds in the conference room that start at 8:30 AM. These rounds include Journal Club, Intern Topic Rounds, and Associate Topic Rounds.

Mixed large animal practice (60% equine, 30% bovine, 10% other ).  Medical, surgical cases of large animal species. 100% ambulatory.

We have a large animal shelter, we do a lot of spay neuter for community cats and for cats and dogs of people with low income. We do a lot of dentistry. We are able to provide a lot of care for shelter animals. One of our veterinarians has done a fellowship in shelter medicine and we thrive to adopt the current best practices in shelter medicine. The student will be exposed to all of these things and will have plenty of opportunity to practice surgery. 

• Our AAHA certified, 25 doctor, small animal hospital offers both General Practice and Emergency services. Our Emergency team operates from 5pm-1am Monday-Friday and from 8am-1am on Weekends and holidays. Our associate doctors see scheduled appointments and walk-in Emergencies from 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday. Medical staff are here 24/7/365.

We are offering a two week externship to a fourth year veterinary student. The student will gain knowledge of the interworkings of a busy general practice. Given the new Covid Pandemic and Parking Lot Policies, the veterinary experience and client interaction is very different. The student will be able to experience that first hand.

Dale City Animal Hospital is an AAHA accredited small animal hospital in Northern Virginia with a high daily caseload. Veterinary students should expect to have a hands-on experience of a general practice providing high-quality routine and emergency medicine.  

Mixed animal practice

Haven Animal Hospital is a small animal (cat/dog) practice that serves the community of Grand Haven, MI. We perform routine vaccinations, wellness visits, sick exams, diagnostic workups, and perform various soft tissue surgeries. 

Eastern Animal Hospital is a large, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital complete with primary, surgical, dental, and urgent care/emergency services. We are a multi-doctor practice and have a visiting orthopaedic surgery specialist who works from our hospital a couple days a week. We have an ultrasonographer who comes to the practice a couple days a week as well. The extern will be able to work alongside tenured and less seasoned doctors in a team setting seeing a wide-range of cases. We are frequently sought after for advanced medical care. We have an intensive care unit and have support staff on-site 24/7/365. A veterinarian is on-call when one is not in the building. We perform most all soft-tissue surgeries at our hospital. We have a full dentistry suite complete with all that is needed to provide the best care. We have excellent relationships with local specialists and have the ability to send patients for CT/MRI at John’s Hopkins.
