Description of Elective Experience:

Description of Elective Experience:

Primarily equine haul-in and ambulatory mixed animal practice in SE Texas, north of Houston.   The student will be able to witness and participate in all aspects of general practice including acupuncture, anesthesia, animal chiropractics, dentistry, examinations, immunizations, lameness evaluation, and surgery.

Description of Elective Experience:

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center is offering externships in Anatomic Pathology and Lab Animal Medicine. The externship will provide extensive experience at an AALAC accredited facility in non-human primate pathology and medicine to veterinary students.

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is one of 6 NIH-funded National Primate Research Centers and is located in Madison, Wisconsin. Major research areas include global infectious disease, regenerative and reproductive medicine, energy metabolism and chronic disease, neuroscience, and transplant medicine.

Students will assist the Pathologists in post-mortem examinations, histopathology and cytology review, and will be responsible for completing one case report with the mentoring of WNPRC pathologists.  The externship will provide limited clinical pathology training (hematology methods, urinalysis, fecal analysis, parasitology assay techniques, and interpretation of results).

The students may attend resident rounds at the School of veterinary medicine and the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for additional clinical pathology, gross pathology, histopathology, and ocular pathology experience. Other scheduled activities will include morbidity and mortality rounds at the WNPRC and attending the NPRC nonhuman primate pathology virtual slide conference.

A short presentation on a topic of importance in Non-human primate medicine and/or pathology during Morbidity and Mortality rounds is required.

 

In addition, the extern is expected to complete a small

research project in the area of infectious disease, behavioral or other areas of interest by

the extern proposed to the coordinator. The learning goals of the externship include but

Description of Elective Experience:

An externship at Purdue involves daily interaction in the consulting office on clinical cases with the clinicians of the case, clinical pathologists and clinical pathology residents. Externs will learn to critically evaluate cytologic and hematologic specimens as well as laboratory data. Activities that the student will engage in include the resident’s weekly journal club, weekly clinical pathology rounds, large animal clinical pathology rounds and other small group sessions with the residents and pathologists. In addition, frequent seminars related to veterinary medicine are often available to attend. Multiple resources will be available for independent development including cataloged study sets and the veterinary medicine library. Participation in the required senior clinical pathology rotation, which involves small group sessions concerning hematology, cytology and clinical chemistry is also an option.  The goal for the externship is to begin building a broad base of experience to continue building upon in the future.

Description of Elective Experience:

I am a very busy, growing small animal practice in Cincinnati.  The student will be exposed to as well as participate in individualized wellness and preventative care, geriatric medicine, surgery, radiology, ultrasound, dental with dental radiographs on all patients, some rabbit spays/neuters, and integrative medicine with acupuncture and some herbs.  During the elective, the student will perform examinations and formulate plans as well as perform spay/neuter with owners permission.  I am a 1 doctor practice and the student will be directly with me the entire elective.

Description of Elective Experience:

The extern will be involved in all aspects of wildlife rehabilitation with a focus on sea turtles, native turtles and birds. The extern will assist with husbandry, medicine and surgery and will interface with both our research and education teams. Dr. Norton is board certified in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. The extern is required to have a small project during their stay and at the end do a powerpoint presentation to the staff.

Our externs will experience what is it like to work in a busy suburban small animal hospital.  They will accoumpany our doctors into exam rooms, help work-up sick pets, assist in surgery and help with interpretation of diagnostic results.

Students will work along side the specialists (we have ECC, IM, Surgery, Cardiology-these options are not available to select above) or emergency service to manage hospitalized and out patient cases.
