Offsite Electives

Veterinary Externship includes shadowing and assisting at our mixed animal hospital. Students are encouraged to be hands-on when appropriate and to work cases with their attending DVM. 

Student will shadow and participate in history taking for ophthalmic cases, performing an ophthalmic exam, ophthalmic diagnostic testing, lesion interpretation, differential diagnosis generation, diagnosis and treatment planning. Journal club and ocular histopathology rounds will be performed weekly.

Summit Bridge Veterinary Hospital is a general practice that also houses Cheyla's Rescue Foundation. Students will have the opportunity to shadow veterinarians as they perform general practice appointments, emergencies, dentistry, and surgeries. In addition, these veterinarians also practice shelter medicine on the in-house rescue pets. This is a good opportunity to see how a general practice operates as well as a rescue organization. 

Through the analysis of poultry, wild, and zoo bird cases (making necropsies, attending presentations, and, if possible, during field trips); the students will acquire knowledge about diseases of poultry (Salmonellosis, ILT, IBV, Avian Influenza, etc.). Prevention and control of these diseases will be highlighted.  

We are a full service large animal hospital in central Texas with a special interest in Bovine (bucking bull) performance medicine. 

Cooper Farms raises 6 million heavy toms annually and has a processing plant and cooked meats plant.  They also have 30,000 sows and raise 800,000 finishing pigs annually and houses 6 million layers.  We have three full time veterinarians on staff as well as welfare auditors, biosecurity auditors, and veterinary assistant.  We will get involved in different aspects of food production medicine in poultry and swine.  These could potentially include necropsy, diagnostics, medication decisions and vaccination decisions.

We are a mixed animal practice. 60% small animal, 40% large animal. We do appointments, technician appointments, and surgeries daily, as well as large animal calls including haul in cattle surgeries when needed.

Working in hospital and on the road with multiple doctors to include routine maintenance, performance horse medicine, bovine ambulatory as well as caprine and ovine farm and hospital work.

Externships can be tailored to your interest, in ER, ICU, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Surgery, Ophthamology, and/or Neurology.

Students in this experience will be exposed to general practice medicine and surgical cases in the canine and feline species. Opportunities for soft tissue surgeries include OHE, BOD, small mass removals, dental cleanings, abdominal exploratory, cystotomy, gastropexy, surgical biopsy, cryosurgery, electrocautery, other.
