U.S. Army Public Health Activity, HI
Description of Elective Experience:

Students receive training and familiarization with all facets of the Army veterinary/public health program.  They are mentored by an Active Duty veterinary officer and are rotated through 1-4 veterinary clinics operated by the Public Health Activity.  They are exposed to preventive veterinary medicine with privately owned animals, as well as surgical procedures with both canine and feline patients.  In addition, they are exposed to the veterinary food safety aspects of the Army mission.  They accompany a veterinary food safety officer to both military food establishments, as well as commercial vendors supplying food to the military and conduct facility inspections and food safety audits.

Description of Elective Experience:

The extern will be working with wildlife veterinarians associated with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center (WHC) at UC Davis, rotating between CDFW's Wildlife Investigations Lab in Rancho Cordova and the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center in Santa Cruz, with variable time spent at the WHC participating in ongoing field research projects and/or oil spill response. At this time, the extern will likely gain practical experience in wildlife immobilization, examination, and transport with Pacific fisher for one week and bighorn sheep for 2 weeks, conduct gross necropsies on a variety of terrestrial wildlife species (including but emphasizing mountain lion) for one week and marine species for one week, and interact with professors and graduate students conducting wildlife disease investigation and management, research projects at the WHC for one week.

Description of Elective Experience:

SMALL AND LARGE ANIMAL

The extern will be shadowing our 7 doctors as well as technicians in our ICU, lab and surgery. They will be trained on hands on patient care for small animals. The right candidate may be able to assist with large animals as well. We see 15% equine and bovine, with a sprinkling of sheep, pigs and goats.

Description of Elective Experience:

Student will accompany private practice owner veterinarian during daily farm visits as well as any emergency calls after hours.

Discussion of cases, case work-up, inventory and business management will also be discussed and observed.

Description of Elective Experience:

Tremont animal clinic is a full service animal clinic that focuses on the health and well-being of dogs and cats.We offer a wide variety of surgical procedures, including elective procedures such as spay, neuter, and declaw. Major abdominal surgery procedures: tumor removals, bladder stone surgery, and orthopedic surgery (including but not limited to cruciate ligament repair and fracture repair). 

Students will be shadowing doctors in exam rooms and will be allowed to observe in surgery.

Students will be actively working with/observing doctors in various areas such as examinations and surgical procedures.  We encourage students to perform various tasks, blood draws, IV Catheter placement, and diagnostic testing.

Description of Elective Experience:

Animal And Avian Medical Center is a 6 DVM private practice located in Brunswick, Ohio (20 min SW of Cleveland).  Our veterinarians treat a large variety of species including dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and pot-bellied pigs, and reptiles.  Our newly renovated hospital is well equipped with in-house lab, digital x-ray and dental x-ray, ultrasound, rigid endoscopy, and more.  Our team based care will allow a student to learn to appreciate the wide variety of personalities that bring care to our patients and clients.  The high quality medical care, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dental services, and bird / small mammal / and exotic services that we offer to our clients is generally only outmatched by referral clinics.  This experience will allow a student to get a realistic appreciation of how a busy, small animal and exotic practice, that offers a large variety of services to a large variety of species, operates.

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a busy 8 doctor practice with extended hours allowing us to treat a variety of cases.  Our available 24-hour technician care allows us to manage intensive medical and surgical cases.  We see a small number of exotic cases. Our hospital also provides grooming and has a large boarding department.

Description of Elective Experience:

Countryside Veterinary Service welcomes students to observe and participate in the large animal department of our practice.  Students will be making farm calls with a large animal veterinarian and will gain experiences with equine lameness, equine dentistry, radiographs, lameness exams, prepurchase exams, equine ultrasound, bovine reproductive ultrasound, dairy herd health, bovine surgeries, preventative medicine for both bovine and equine and more.  While the majority of our focus is equine and bovine, we also service caprine, ovine and porcine.  We strive to provide a learning environment that allows the student gain practical experience.

Description of Elective Experience:

Students will be able to observe and participate in all aspects of small animal medicine.  We offer dentistry, soft tissue and elective surgeries, internal medicine and inpatient and outpatient care.  Students will learn about client care along with patient care to be successful as a practitioner.  Opportunities to work closely with staff along with the doctor will allow students to develop communication skills, time management, and staff management.  Students will also learn about practice management, marketing, and financial considerations.
