Description of Elective Experience

The clinical rotation in zoological medicine and surgery at Zoo Miami is designed to give senior veterinary students hands-on introductory veterinary experience in clinical zoo animal medicine and surgery and exposure to a large variety of zoo animal species. Students will participate in zoo animal medicine, anesthesia, surgery, preventive medicine, clinical pathology, gross pathology, husbandry, nutrition, and conservation medicine. Students help prepare for and assist with planned medical procedures and emergencies, care of hospitalized animals and monitoring their status, necropsies, and participate in record-keeping, journal reviews, and topic rounds. At the conclusion of the externship, students also give a presentation to zoo staff about a predetermined topic or the results of a small project completed during the externship.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students help prepare for and assist with planned medical procedures and emergencies, care of hospitalized animals and monitoring their status, necropsies, and participate in record-keeping, journal reviews, and topic rounds. At the conclusion of the externship, students also give a presentation to zoo staff about a predetermined topic or the results of a small project completed during the externship.
