Woodland View Equine Service, OH

Description of Elective Experience

The student will be required to assist in the everyday activities.  We will be doing routine small animal elective procedures, equine reproduction , dentistry and ambulatory services as well as equine lameness exams and radiographs.  It will probably include nerve blocks and  flexion tests.  It will probably include colic exams and suturing lacerated horses.  The day will start at 7:30am and end between 6 and 8 PM.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our practice has ultrasound and digital radiography in addition to large and small animal anesthesia. We have an endoscope for adult respiratory exams.  We also have a radial shock wave unit and laser machine.  We have 1 part time assistant and 1 part time vet tech.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will arrive at 7:30 am and depending on the work load will probably work until 6-8pm.  They will be assisting me in both small animal and equine restraint.  They will be drawing blood for lab work such as coggins tests as well as filling out the associated documents.  They will be assisting in taking radiographs and floating horse's teeth.  I will expose them to as much as I can and let them have as much hands on experience as we both feel they can handle and are comfortable with.  They will work Monday through Friday.
