Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center, WI

Description of Elective Experience

At Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center (WCVC), we perform an average of 65 spay/neuters per day Monday-Thursday. The cats and dogs we perform surgeries on are owned pets, outdoor cats, and adoptable cats and dogs from our shelter and partnering rescue, shelter, and humane organizations. We also perform dental surgeries, soft-tissue, orthopedic, and other specialized surgeries, and provide high-volume primary, wellness, and urgent care services. Throughout the year, WCVC hosts 4th-year veterinary students in our Veterinary Externship Program on two-week rotations to gain hands-on surgical experience. Students will perform pre- and post-surgical exam, participate in and perform spay/neuter surgeries under the supervision of our Doctors of Veterinary Medicine four days per week, and gain experience in our Primary Care & Wellness department one day per week during their rotation.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The number of surgeries students participate in and perform is based on a handful of considerations, primarily prior experience and comfort level and our veterinarians' observations and comfort level with the student's skills. Students typically get acclimated on the first day, observing and possibly performing cat neuters. From there, the process varies with each unique student. Externs may work on a single surgery together or perform surgeries on their own under the supervision of a veterinarian. It is our hope that each student will have the opportunity to participate in spays and neuters for cats and dogs, and this will again vary based on student skills and progress as deemed by our vets.
