Description of Elective Experience

Embark on the ultimate wildlife veterinary adventure in the heart of Guatemala! 

Join forces with expert wildlife veterinarians at the country’s leading rescue and rehabilitation center, where you'll gain hands-on experience caring for incredible native species. 

Take part in clinical procedures from intake to recovery—administer injections, collect samples, assist in surgeries and treatments, and observe diagnostic practices firsthand. 

Dive deep into the world of neotropical primates, parrots, reptiles, and carnivores through engaging lectures and case-based discussions focused on Wildlife Medicine, One Health, and Conservation. 

Get practical training in animal handling, safe capture techniques, enrichment strategies, and husbandry, including feeding and behavioral observation. 

During your stay, you’ll also join the annual health checks for resident animals—an incredible chance to sharpen your skills in wildlife care and vet procedures. 

And to top it off? Experience a thrilling two-day journey to the iconic Tikal National Park, where ancient Mayan ruins meet rich jungle biodiversity for the ultimate archaeological and wildlife exploration!

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

1. Staffing and Supervision

  • Veterinary Team: Two qualified wildlife veterinarians, each with over 20 years of professional experience, oversee all clinical procedures, fieldwork, and student mentorship.
  • Biologist: A dedicated biologist contributes expertise in wildlife ecology, behavior, and conservation, supporting both field operations and educational activities.
  • Interns: Interns from both veterinary and biological disciplines may be present, assisting with daily operations and providing additional peer support.
  • Caretakers: A team of caretakers manages daily husbandry, enclosure maintenance, feeding, and general animal care under the supervision of veterinary and biological staff.

2. Facilities and Equipment

  • Fully equipped veterinary clinic capable of handling a wide range of clinical procedures, diagnostics, and treatments.
  • Laboratory facilities for sample processing and diagnostic testing.
  • Enclosures and rehabilitation areas tailored for the diverse native species, including primates, parrots, reptiles, and carnivores.
  • Equipment for safe animal handling, capture, and enrichment activities.
  • Data management systems for record keeping and case tracking.
  • Educational resources, including lecture spaces and reference materials, to support structured learning.

3. Educational Resources

  • Supervised practical training in veterinary procedures, animal handling, and husbandry.
  • Expert-led lectures and case discussions focusing on Wildlife Medicine, One Health, and Conservation principles.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

WildeGuatemala is a 14 day course that includes working with the wildlife vet and animal care taking team each day. You will participate in call outs and rescues, patient intakes, resident animal medical care and assess animals at each stage in their rehabilitation journey.
