Description of Elective Experience

Western Ohio Veterinary Services is a mixed animal practice. Students will gain experience in routine wellness, sickness, as well as small animal surgeries. Our large animal side will also have an opportunity to observe and perform routine wellness exams with a focus on show pig and equine medicine. Depending on the time of the year, students may be able to participate in c-sections, soft tissue surgeries, cosmetic surgeries, and others. Other large animals that are occasionally worked on include small ruminants, beef and dairy cattle. Dr. Deeter is also the Darke County Fair veterinarian, so depending on the time of year, students may be able to shadow at the fair and help with urine collection and treating 4-H animals.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

One doctor, seven support staff, small and large animal surgical area, digital x-ray, Idexx blood machines, ultrasounds, basic equine and small animal dental equipment, mobile large animal veterinary unit.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be expected to be at the clinic during normal business hours Monday through Friday and available in the evenings and weekends if needed for an emergency call. Students will be able to get hands on experience with the supervision of Dr. Deeter.
