Description of Elective Experience

Learning Objectives:

  •  Acquire an understanding of commercial turkey production

    • On-farm field visits with Company Veterinarian

    • Meet WLF farmers and owners

  • Learn how the concepts of veterinary medicine apply in a practical, field setting.

    • Participate in any necropsies 

    • Participate in health visits with vet 

    • Participate in case-based discussions and related conversations with production veterinarians and/or nutritionists.

    • Acquire and develop communication skills in visits with growers 

  • Acquire an understanding of the importance of biosecurity through practical application and observation.

  •  Learn of the impact food safety and public health have on both live production and food processing.

  • Develop an understanding of the current issues facing turkey production.

  • Develop an understanding of the importance of proper management, health programs, and biosecurity in the overall goal of preventative flock health. 

  • Develop an understanding of the complexity of interactions that occur between/within the live production and food processing divisions.
