Description of Elective Experience

Students participating in an elective experience at our veterinary clinic will gain hands-on exposure to small animal medicine in a fast-paced, team oriented environment. The  experience may include observing and assisting with physical exams, diagnostics, surgery preparation, dental procedures, client communication, treatment planning, and patient care. Students will work alongside veterinarians, technicians, and support staff to develop a better understanding of daily clinical operations, medical decision making, client communication, and compassionate patient care. Opportunities for learning are tailored to the student's level of experience and education goals. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our clinic provides students with access to a collaborative learning environment supported by experienced veterinarians, technicians, assistants, trained support staff, and wonderful clients and paitents to take care of. Educational resources may include hands-on clinical observation, case discussions, diagnostic equipement, in-house laboratory services, digital radiology, surgical and dental suites, electronic medical records, and exposure to a variety of medical and surgical cases. Students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in team discussions, and develp practical knowledge and professional skills in a real world veterinary setting. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students participating are expected to maintain professionalism, punctuality, and willingness to learn throughout their time at the clinic. Typical schedules may include weekday hours during normal business operations, with specific days and times arranged in advance based on clinic needs and the student's availability. 

Students will primarily shadow veterinarians will observing daily operations and patient care. Depending on the student's experience level, comfort, and applicable school guidelines, opportunities may be available to assist with basic supportive tasks such as patient restraint, preparation of supplies, observing procedures, and assisting with non-medical duties under staff supervision. Students are expected to follow all clinic policies regarding safety, confidentiality, and patient handling at all times.
