Veterinary Surgical Specialists of OC, CA

Description of Elective Experience

Our externs are completely immersed in the veterinary surgery specialty experience.  They are involved with the initial consult,

diagnostics, diagnosis, surgery and post op care.  We have them shadow one of our Board Certified Surgeons along with have support from their licensed technician staff.  If your extern wants hands on experience with monitoring anesthesia, placing IV catheters or other procedures, they just need to let us know, and we will get them involved.

They are able to scrub in with the surgeons and one of surgical assistants for each surgical procedure that the surgeon has.  We average about 5-7 surgeries per day per surgeon- we usually have two surgeons in surgery Monday- Friday and one on Saturday.

We are open on the weekend and available for 24 hour emergency surgeries.

We also have Internal Medicine, Critical Care Emergency Medicine and developing a Nephrology department.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Your externs are surrounded by a knowledgeable team.  We have 4 Board Certified Surgeons, 16 surgery RVTs, 4 Patient Care RVTs, 6 surgical assistants and more support team to help provide top quality care for our patients and an excellent learning environment for any of our externs.

Our equipment includes digital radiology, scope equipment, CT machine, 3D imaging, top of the line monitoring, including telemetry.

Our procedures vary from mass removals, cholecystectomies, scope procedures, THR, to SUB placements and many more.

Our team loves what we do, and our goal is to share that passion with any of the externs we work with.  We encourage questions and look forward to being part of our externs learning.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We are open 7 days a week. 7am- 6pm, although our surgery procedures often take us to later hours.

Our students are with a Board Certified Surgeon and their RVT team Monday- Friday 8am-6pm.

They are encouraged to stay until the end of day if they are able.  They are also encouraged to come in on the weekend.

They can shadow only if they want, but we strongly encourage them to be more hands on for a more immersive learning experience.
