Description of Elective Experience

Extern will shadow and work with multiple board certified veterinary ophthalmologists in clinical ophthalmology - eye examination, performing and assisting with diagnostics, history taking, assessment of clinical findings, handling of diagnostic instruments; assisting in anesthesia induction, monitoring and recovery; surgery prepping, assistance and observation; discussion of cases/treatment/pharmacology; verbal inquiry and quizzing on any clinical topic in ophtho; with access to various references

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

3 DACVOs, approximately 10 support staff, 3 fully equipped examination rooms, 1 fully equipped OR, separate diagnostics room for electroretinograms and ocular ultrasound, treatment room with microscope, centrifuge, etc.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will work 5 days a week, all day (9-6 or later); student will start with shadowing and may go on to handle direct client contact and outpatient appointments, as ability and interest dictate; assisting or performing basic diagnostics; technicians are available to assist the student to examine patients
