The VEG Externship Program provides students with an exciting, well-rounded emergency medicine experience. Students in the program work alongside our skilled emergency doctors and support staff, and may even have hands-on learning opportunities. Emergency medicine is unpredictable in nature, it keeps you on your paws! Students will focus on learning how to communicate effectively with our clients, diagnose a variety of emergency conditions, develop emergency treatment plans, and collaborate with support staff in a fast-paced environment- all the while being fully immersed in the VEG culture.
a role as an extern includes:
Staffing: 11 emergency veterinarians, 20 licensed vet techs, 15 veterinary assistants, and 5 receptionists; one internal medicine specialist who comes in for ultrasound + consults
Equipment: ligasure, cautery, ultrasound, digital radiography, transfusion equipment, incubator, snyder o2 cage, and more!
We tailor the schedule to the student and provide a mix of day, swing, night emergency experience. We are flexible with schedule and aim for 36-40 hours based on shift types (our doctors typically work 10-12 hour shifts). This tends to mean 3 shifts/week. A student extern is always paired to an emergency veterinarian, and it is a 1 on 1 experience.
We are open to cover cost of living expenses, whether it be a portion of cost and entire cost. We do not have our own housing so it is a stipend to help cover air bnb/hotel expenses. Our hospitals all have a private staff bathroom with a shower. There are spaces like locker rooms to be the student's belongings. We do not tend to have students bring pets to VEG due to needing proof of vaccination, etc., but there are plenty of pet friendly living situations in the area, and we are always welcome to have them leave to walk their pet as needed if they do bring them along.
