Veterinary Emergency Center is a fast-paced small animal emergency clinic that treats dogs and cats located in Maumee, Ohio. We are an emergency hospital with a strong passion for patient advocacy, high quality medicine, and collaboration! Students will shadow and actively discuss a wide variety of emergency cases with the attending veterinarian, gaining exposure to physical examinations, diagnostic workups, and treatment planning. As time allows students will also be able to have the opportunity to take the lead during examinations with input from the doctor on duty.

Our team typically includes 1–4 doctors, approximately 7 technicians, and 6 assistants, with one doctor per shift.
Veterinary Emergency Center is equipped with a comprehensive in-house IDEXX laboratory, including IDEXX analyzers such as Sedivue, Catalyst, ProCyte, coagulation testing, SNAP test reader, and a standard microscope.
We offer digital radiography, with the option to submit studies to a board-certified radiologist through Vet’s Choice Radiology. Ultrasound is available and primarily utilized for FAST scans.
The clinic is equipped with a small oxygen cage for straightforward oxygen-dependent cases. Surgical and procedural capabilities include electrocautery, suction, and full anesthesia monitoring (SpO₂, NIBP, ETCO₂, temperature, and ECG).
Additional equipment includes standard fluid pumps, syringe pumps, and a Cubex system for controlled substance containment.
Students may participate through shadowing and/or hands-on support, based on individual preferences and comfort level. A licensed veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician will supervise students at all times.

Students are expected to work during the clinic’s operating hours as agreed upon during externship scheduling. Veterinary Emergency Center is open nights (Monday–Friday, 5:00 pm–1:00 am), weekends (Saturday–Sunday, 10:00 am–10:00 pm), and holidays. Students are expected to complete at least two weekend shifts, as these are typically busier and provide increased exposure to emergency cases.
