Description of Elective Experience

Mostly observational, this rotation will expose students to diagnosis and treatment of periodontal, endodontic, oral surgical oncology, orthodontic anod immune-mediated oral conditions.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Cone beam CT, dental radiography (CR and DR), high speed dental drill, ultrasonic scalers, anesthesia monitoring equipment including agent monitors, anesthesiologist, VTSs in dentistry and anesthesia. Library of dental texts and Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. Multiple PowerPoint presentations on dentistry and oral surgery.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Monday-Thursday rotation. Arrive at 8am and shadow doctors and VTS technicians on appointments and assist in surgery. Students are expected to help with case write-ups using one of two software systems (Evetpractice or ADC). Other duties include helping restrain for blood draws, catheter placements, anesthetic induction and recovery. Daily end time is variable depending on when patients are discharged.
