Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio, OH

Description of Elective Experience

We are a veterinary dentistry and oral surgery specialty referral clinic. Student externs will learn basic dentistry and anesthesia and will be exposed to higher risk anesthetic cases as well as advanced dentistry and oral surgery cases.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have Ohio's only board-certified veterinary dentist. Additionally we are staffed with VTS specialty technicians in both dentistry and anesthesia/analgesia. We have a full library with texts and journals on dentistry as well as many texts on anesthesia. Both technicians previously taught students and were employed by OSU CVM and are therefore comfortable with hands-on student learning. Dr. Berning teaches dentistry throughout the country and has for 8 years. The education opportunity provided to students is expected to be outstanding.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will arrive at 7am each day, Monday-Thursday, and will be present until the end of the day (typically 5pm). Students will be able to watch and learn basics of dental radiography, dental anatomy, dental procedures (basic and advanced), anesthesia, and more. Cadaver cases will be performed by the student in any downtime.
