We are a veterinary dentistry only hospital, so students will have the opportunity to see all things dentistry including extractions, endodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, and other oral surgery (tumor excision, foreign body removal, trauma repair, etc.). Depending on the length of their stay, students will have an opportunity to perform extractions, nerve blocks, and other procedures on cadavers.
We currently have 2 boarded dentists, an associate veterinarian that will be taking boards this year, and two dental residents (one senior and one junior resident). We have 1 to 2 register technicians per doctor and other non-registered support staff in the front and back of the hospital. We have an anesthesiologist on staff for review of all anesthetic plans prior to procedures and multiple anesthesiologists that we pull from for direct monitoring cases, usually 2-3 days a month. We have standard anesthetic monitors (ECG, SpO2, Indirect BP, Temp, CO2), ventilators, syringe pumps, doppler BP, etc. We have dental radiographs in all 4 of our surgery rooms and a single cone beam CT. For in-house diagnostics we have IDEXX CBC, CHEM, Lytes, and Sedivue, full body radiography, CardioPet ECG, etc. This list is not exhaustive. Please ask if there is something not listed that you'd like to know if we have.
We typically work from 8-5 pm weekdays, although there are days that we may start later or end later depending on the caseload. Once monthly, we are open on the weekend, but students are not required to be present those days. Most of the time students would be shadowing consultations and surgeries. Depending on the length of their stay, we will have students learn full mouth dental radiographs and/or extractions on dog and/or cat cadaver heads. Also, students often have an opportunity to place sealants on teeth and perform oral nerve blocks with supervision on our patients.
