Description of Elective Experience

Two weeks of veterinary dentistry experience. Learned skills will be practiced via canine extractions on a cadaver head on the final day of the extramural.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Dental specialist, vetereinary dental practitioner, RVTs, VTS (dentistry), VAs. All equipment pertaining to veterinary dentistry, including CBCT.

Veterinary Student Externship Veterinary Dentistry Learning Objectives

  • Understand the dental arcade in dogs and cats. This includes being familiar with the deciduous and permanent dentition.
  • Be able to name teeth based on the modified Triadan system.
  • Familiarizing yourself with the normal occlusion of dogs and cats.
  • Know some of the risk associated with malocclusions.
  • What is the difference of attrition and abrasions?
  • Be able to perform an oral physical exam, this includes being comfortable with the extra oral portion of the exam as well as the oral.
  • Understanding proper instrument handling when performing your oral exam.
  • Be able to identify the anatomy involved in local blocks used for dental procedures.
  • Knowing the most common problems seen in veterinary dentistry.
  • Periodontal disease, how do you stage it?
  • How are Furcation and attachment loss association with periodontal disease?
  • Tooth Resorption, what are the types and stages associated with resorption?
  • The treatments involved with tooth resorption and when they should be applied.
  • Observation of exodontic procedures and the use of flap procedures.
  • Observation of endodontic procedures when cases are available. Understanding when endodontic procedures are recommended.
  • Understanding dental radiographs and how they can be used to better understand disease.
  • Additional Diseases associated with veterinary dentistry
  • Familiarizing yourself with the good dental resources available.
