VCA Rutherford Animal Hospital, NJ

Description of Elective Experience

Typically 2-4 weeks, an externship is an opportunity to practice and gain constructive feedback working alongside our medical teams. Immerse yourself in daily operations, such as medical rounds, client communication, diagnostics, and patient planning. You'll also be introduced to our custom medical record management system and educational support platforms.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are open Monday-Thursday 7:30-8pm, Friday and Saturday 8-6 and closed on Sunday. We have 3 full time associate doctors 1 full time Medical Director and 1 part time associate doctor. We do surgery every day Monday - Friday. We mainly see cats and dogs, but we will occasionally get some wild life like squirrels in since we work with several shelters and rescue groups. We have a dedicated surgery assistant team, and a dedicated pharmacy department.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Our externship experiences at VCA are tailored to meet the needs of each student. Typically, our program pairs the student with a licensed veterinarian to shadow and collaborate on various cases presented to our facility. The student will perform or assist in completing physical examinations, create plans to determine specific diagnoses, participate in treatment option discussions, help the doctor with notes (practicing/observing how to write a medical record), and engage in other patient-related tasks.
