Description of Elective Experience

The Elective Experience at Value Pet Vet is designed for individuals seeking hands-on exposure to veterinary medicine in a high-quality, affordable care setting. This program offers participants the opportunity to gain practical experience in patient care, client communication, and clinical procedures while working alongside experienced veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff. We work with public and volume rescue clients. We offer full private practice with lower cost spay/neuters, wellness and vaccines.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will actively engage in various aspects of veterinary medicine, including:

Medical & Surgical Experience:

• Assisting in spay and neuter procedures

• Supporting doctors during basic surgeries and dental procedures

• Observing and assisting in soft tissue surgeries, ACL repairs, emergency spays, foreign body removals, and other critical procedures

• Learning how to take and interpret X-rays and ultrasounds

Client Communication & Education:

• Engaging directly with clients in exam rooms, discussing preventative care, wellness plans, and treatment options

• Educating clients on flea/tick and heartworm preventatives, vaccines, and senior pet health

• Handling client concerns and guiding them through referral processes for specialty care. Pharmacy and refills, ongoing RX care and treatment options. 

General Veterinary Practice Exposure:

• Participating in wellness and sick exams, helping to diagnose and manage illnesses, senior pet profiles, and chronic conditions

• Learning about practice management, appointment scheduling, and medical record-keeping

• Supporting the team in handling and restraining patients safely

Student Responsibilities & Expectations:

• Time Commitment: Minimum 2-4 days per week, flexible scheduling available

• Hours: Clinic hours are typically 9:30AM-4PM, with shifts varying based on surgery and appointment schedules

• Role: A combination of shadowing and hands-on support in both medical and client-facing aspects of veterinary care

• Professionalism: Students are expected to maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude, adhere to clinic protocols, and be proactive in learning opportunities
