Upstate Vet Emergency and Specialty Care, SC

Description of Elective Experience

Student will shadow specialists in areas of their choosing.  Based on specialist comfort level and student competency, permission may be given to partake in hands-on procedures (joint taps, e-tube placement, IV catheter placement, etc.).  Student will attend morning transfer rounds between ER and specialty.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are a multi-specialty institution with 24/7 ER.  We currently have a total of 13 specialists (medicine, cardio, dentistry, oncology, radiation oncology, neurology, surgery, ECC) and 13 ER doctors.  We work with and external radiology group for CT/MRI interpretation and rad interp when needed.  We have a dermatology group that works out of our building.

We have ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, CT and MRI.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Externship experiences are built based on student needs/desires.  Typically we do a 40 hour week, M-F if with specialty.  If they have an ER preference, day, swing or overnight hours can be offered.  They will be paired with a DVM to shadow during their time and can shadow multiple specialities or areas.
