Our small animal veterinary hospital clinical experience typically involves hands-on exposure to the medical care of companion animals such as dogs and cats in a clinical setting. We provide advanced students there own appointment schedule with direct client/patient interactions, while a clinician is available for consulting and complete chart review. All diagnostics, procedures, and treatments are discussed prior to performing and intervention of the clinician is immediately available should the need arise. The student will also be able to perform surgery as the primary surgeon with the clinician as assistant surgeon. The surgeries would included spay/neuter, mass removals, various soft tissue surgeries and dental extractions. Our goal is to create an opportunity for the student to get comfortable being the primary decision maker for medical cases and in surgery, while allowing them the opportunity for help if needed.
Our facilities allows hands‐on procedures (suturing, catheter placement, anesthesia induction, physical exam techniques, digital radiographs, ultrasound, soft tissue surgery) in a safe, supervised environment. There are experienced veterinarians who provide guidance, feedback, answer questions, help reflect on their decisions, and help develop professional judgment. Our facility also utilizes digital learning platforms like Veterinary Information Network (VIN) and Plumbs, as well as physical copies of drug formularies, medical and surgical text books, and veterinary medical journals.
Our facility is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. We would expect the student to be on premise cumulatively 40 hours a week. There will be a short introduction to the practice on their first day where we will explain our process and expectations. This will be shadowing for the student. After that, they will be expected to take on appointments or surgeries (depending on the day)
