Description of Elective Experience

This elective will provide a two week clinical rotation in small animal emergency and critical care medicine. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our university hospital has a 24/7 staffed emergency & critical care unit equipped with advanced patient monitoring and supportive care measures. Additional specialties within the hospital include cardiology, neurology, internal medicine, oncology, surgery, anesthesia, exotics, radiology, clinical pathology, radiation therapy, and a registered pharmacy. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students on emergency are scheduled for nine shifts over a two week span; the shifts include four day shifts, four swing shifts, and one late swing shift. Students are expected to triage patients and help facilitate initial assessment & stabilization of patients as well as creation of complete diagnostic and treatment plans.  Students will communicate with owners and initiate appropriate medical records documentation items.
