University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine Anatomic Pathology Service, TN

The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences Anatomic Pathology group offers 1-3 week externships for those students interested in pursuing additional skills and training in diagnostic anatomic pathology. The college is located in Knoxville, TN.

Standard staffing and facilities including 7-8 anatomic pathology faculty and an average of 6 residents.

Externs who have demonstrated an interest in pursuing pathology as a career spend their time experiencing all aspects of the pathology training program.

• Externs spend their mornings screening biopsies with the duty resident and pathologist, and are expected to take 1-3 cases a week for their own evaluation and write up.
• Externs attend 2-4 resident training morning sessions each week, which may include histopathology, image interpretation, special species, and/or clinical specialty rounds including ophthalmology, cardiology, or neurology. Externs attend journal club each week and may attend Friday morning faculty rounds and/or hospital wide tumor or medicine boards.
• Externs spend the afternoon with the duty resident, pathologist, and rotating senior students on the necropsy floor. Necropsy caseload averages approximately 25 per week and is composed of 45% large animal, 30% small animal, and 25% non-domestic species. Externs are expected to write up at least one, and often more, gross reports each week.
• Externs are expected to work approximately 40 hour weeks and may take weekend service call as interests and time allows.
