Uniontown Veterinary Clinic, OH

Description of Elective Experience

The elective provides a well-rounded exposure to general veterinary practice, including wellness care, illnesses, routine surgery and dentistry, physical therapy, and more.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our practice maintains 2-3 veterinarians and approximately 12 support staff members including registered veterinary technicians.  We also have a second location in Canton, Ohio (13 miles away).  Available equipment include CO2 surgical laser, therapy laser, TENS unit, therapuetic and diagnostic ultrasound, digital radiography, high speed dental unit, iso and sevoflurane gas anesthesia, and IDEXX blood suite.  We practice an advanced level of medicine with a hometown touch.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The selected student will be scheduled 40 hours per week.  Hours will match those of the practice (Mon-Thurs 8am-6pm, Friday 8am-5pm, Sat 8am-Noon).  The student may opt for additional hours in any given week if desired.

The selected student will assist the practice owner and associate veterinarians in the following duties:

  • Assist in various surgeries, including spay/neuter/declaw, mass removals, exploratories, dental procedures and more.  Practice with a surgical laser will be available.
  • Learn and assist during physical therapy/therapy laser/TENS therapy appointments
  • Perform TPR, and assist the doctors during exams and treatments
  • Laboratory duties-Prepare and read cytology samples from blood, urine, skin and feces.
Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

The selected student will have two choices of housing:

1) Free housing:  Student may stay at the residence of the practice owner.  Most meals will be provided, if desired.  The home is non-smoking and in a very safe community.  The residence does have pets (dogs and cats), so no outside pets will be permitted.  The residence is within 3 miles of the practice.

2) House For Rent:  The practice owner does own a furnished rental house within 1 mile of the practice.  The home must remain smoke-free.  Pet(s) will be permitted, but must remain on a flea-preventative.  Rent, with utilities included (electric, gas, water, and sewer), will be $400 per month.  A Rental Agreement and renter's insurance will be required.
