Description of Elective Experience

The student will experience the full range of our mixed animal practice caseload (which includes cattle, equine, small ruminant, swine, poultry & companion small animals (cats, dogs, pocket pets)), including dairy herd health visits, ambulatory sick animal calls, and in-clinic small animal appointments & surgeries.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our 6000 sq. ft. clinic includes a full in-house lab (Idexx CBC/blood chemistry analyzer), bacterial culture lab, Cornerstone practice management software, Digital Standard & Dental X-ray units , High-speed Dental Unit, Ultrasound (small animal and portable large animal), Isoflurane anesthetic units, Cardell Touch Multiparameter Anesthetic Monitor with ECG/pulse oximetry/CO2/blood pressure monitoring, TonoPen, and 2 fully-equipped large animal trucks with PortaVet units.  Clinic library resources include current reference texts, digital reference files, and internet access.  Current staffing includes 5 doctors (3 full-time, 2 part-time), 4 Veterinary Assistants, 2 Receptionists, Office Finance Manager, Inventory Manager, Kennel Attendants & Housekeeping Personnel.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Clinic hours are 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday.  The student will be scheduled 40+ hours per week, and will rotate among the doctors, including time spent on ambulatory farm calls, clinic appointments, surgeries, and after-hours large animal emergencies.
