Toledo Humane Society, OH

Description of Elective Experience

Our shelter has a robust surgical and medical program - we do routine S/N surgeries plus almost any other soft tissue surgery necessary, plus a few orthopedic procedures - mainly FHOs and amputations.  Additionally we have dental xray and two dental stations.  We have digital xray and a two-table surgery suite.

We also opened a public clinic in a separate location in 2022 that serves 5 zip codes in Toledo, providing access to care in an urban setting.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have 6 RVTs and 4 veterinarians on staff plus additional assistants.

Both our shelter and our clinic have digital xray and dental xray, our shelter has two dental stations (two Midmark dental machines) and a two-table surgery suite, our clinic has one dental station and a two-table surgery suite.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student is welcome to work either just at the clinic or at the shelter, or a combination of both.  They will receive lots of surgical experience at the shelter.
