Thompson Embryo Services, OH

Description of Elective Experience

Thompson Embryo Services does on-farm embryo transfer services for cattle. Our clients are primarily beef cattle. We perform flushing, grading, freezing, and transfer of embryos. This is a one doctor practice that does not have any technical help either. This gives students to see how they can work embryo transfer into their practice without the need for additional staff.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

All equipment necessary for flushing, grading, freezing, and transferring embryos. This includes embryo transfer computer programs for keeping records, making donor schedules, and making embryo labels.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to ride along with and assist Dr. Thompson on all farm visits he goes on during that week. This is 40+/- hours depending on the time of year. Students will have the opportunity to palpate donor and recipient reproductive tracts, handle and grade embryos, and assist in flushing, freezing, and transferring embryos.
