Summit Pet Hospital is a private, independently owned veterinary office in Erie, PA. We emphasize common sense veterinary medicine with a personal touch. Building strong relationships that benefit our fuzzy clients and their owners. SPH caters primarily to dogs and cats, however, our doctor owns a working farm with over 100 head of cattle, goats, pigs, and chicken. SPH also has occasional 'farm calls' or large animals brought to the clinic for care. At Summit, we provided comprehensive care including wellness visits, sick patient management, emergency care, diagnostics, dentistry, and numerous types of surgery. We will immerse the student in the daily work of a single doctor veterinary office, where everyone is cross trained and wears many hats. This may include routine wellness exams, medical workups, emergency triage, surgical cases, diagnostics, building relationships, learning the business of owning a practice and 'selling' your services. In addition, the student will have opportunities to work with large animals on reproduction and management on the doctor's farm. SPH also runs a small animal rescue which will give the student's opportunities to possibly exam, work with neonatal animals, and dog training.
The student will collaborate with our VMD, Dr. Susan Stroup and our support staff. SPH also has a sizeable resource library for extra investigation. The clinic has digital radiograph, in-house laboratory, ECG, cautery system, ultra sound, laser therapy, and other modalities for diagnostics and care.
The student will be expected to be at the clinic at least M, T, Th, F - 12:00 to 7, W from 12 - 3. However, opportunities to help the manager/technicians will be available starting at 9 each day. In addition and depending on the schedule and amount of emergencies, hours may be extended in the evening indefinitely. The student will be expected to act and dress professionally (business casual). They will also be required to preform at their best every day. Additional responsibilities will be added as their skill set and comfort level increases. Additional large animal hours may be experienced on Wednesday after the clinic closes and during the weekend.
