For fourth year veterinary students they will be required to present a case in depth from clinical presentation to diagnostics to treatment and outcome. They will dive in to the case and be able to explain all of the procedures and things they would do differently. They will present this to our team of doctors.
They also will perform surgeries as either a ram castration with them planning anesthesia or doing spays and neuters on the shelter animals for a day.
They will otherwise be involved in clinical case discussion and dive into their area of clinical interest. They will be asked their opinion and focus on details especially tested about in national boards.
We allow for case presentations.
In house we have:
Digital X rays
Ultrasound
Full bloodwork capabilities (T4, Chemistries, lytes, progesterones, cortisol, pancreatic quantitative testing, CBCs, blood smears, AI cytology technology, fecals, etc)
We have microscopes that project to screens for better teaching tools for students and clients.
Student will be responsible for coming in for cases 5 of the 7 days of a week during this externship. They will shadow and work on technical skills they elect. Then they will do drop off patient physical exams and go over the case in detail with the mentor (Me, Mindy Price, DVM). They will work on an involved case and go over their preliminary presentation for critiques 1 week in to the externship. Then the final presentation will be on the last day. They will be responsible for studying for one anesthesia case and discussing choice of drugs and how to select them for a patient.
