Stevelt's Veterinary Clinic, OH

Description of Elective Experience

Our clinic is a 46 year old general practice in rural southeastern Ohio. While we were originally a truly mixed animal practice, we are now primarily small animal. Dogs & cats make up the gross majority of our patients, but we do see a small amount of chickens, rodents, snakes, horses, and occasionally food animal patients when they are brought into the clinic. We no longer make farm calls. We have over 1,700 clients, and see a wide variety of medical and surgical cases.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our practice currently consists of 2 DVMs and 5 support staff. We have digital radiography, diff quik/microscope, pulse ox, isoflurane anesthesia, in-house blood work machines, in-house urinalysis machine, tono-pen, dental drill & polisher, an extensive library of reference books, etc.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will be expected to be present anytime a DVM is working, which is generally M/T/R/F from 9-5:30, and W may be added back in soon. W would be 9-1:00. They would be expected to go into the exam room first, take a history and do a physical, present their notes to the DVM, and then observe as the DVM completes the physical and the appointment. They will give injections, draw blood, run labs, and be given supervised surgical and dental opportunities, depending on the capability of the individual student. They will be given as many hands on opportunities as possible.
