Description of Elective Experience

Externs will be involved in physical examinations, case discussions, and may help with formulating treatment plans. Opportunities for viewing radiographs, ultrasound exams, and performing elective surgeries under supervision. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our practice consists of four experienced veterinarians and twelve licensed veterinary technicians. We primarily focus on small animal care but also have expertise in treating a range of exotic pets, including rabbits, reptiles, pocket pets, and birds. 

Our facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including digital x-ray, a dental suite with x-ray, ultrasound, in-house IDEXX laboratory analyzers, Imagyst slide analyzers, endoscopy, cautery, and video otoscopy. Our practice utilizes fully electronic medical records (AVImark PIMS). The practice has a VIN subscription as well as an on-site medical library.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

You will be expected to follow a doctor's schedule of at least 30-36 hours per week. Doctors are scheduled for 3 1/2 to 4 days per week. Our practice hours are as follows:

* Monday and Thursday: 8 am to 8 pm

* Tuesday and Wednesday: 8 am to 6 pm

* Friday and Saturday: 8 am to 12 pm

You are welcome to shadow any of our doctors during these times. Surgeries are performed in the mornings from Monday through Thursday, and you may choose one or two days each week to shadow or participate in these procedures. During appointment hours, there are generally at least two doctors on duty.

There is no housing on-site, but housing can be arranged if needed.
